1. Pay-Per-Click
2. Organic Search Results
3. Banner Ad
4. Local Sites and Directories

What is Pay-Per-Click?

Pay-per-click is a marketing system on the Web in which the advertiser pays when the user clicks on its advertisement and goes to its site. This is a more interactive, results-oriented method compared to paying for just the placement of a banner ad on a Web page regardless if anyone clicks on it. You can find these campaigns on any Google search page. When you type “insurance”, you will find 3 links at the top of the page in a yellowish box (those are PPC campaigns) and on the right side of the page (those are also PPC campaigns). These plans work on a bidding basis, the person that bids the highest, gets the best spot.

What is Organic Search Results?

These are the results listed on the search engine page that appear because of their relevance of the searched terms. Getting to the “top of Google” is a mixture of the right kind of web design, the right kind of links and the right kind of content (among other things).

What are banner ads?

A banner ad or banner is an advertisement placed on a Website above, below or on the sides of the Web site's main content that links to the advertisers own Web site. These banner ads can be a great tool if placed in the right place, or can be a waste of money. Statistically banner ads can be as successful as 1%, so you need to either think long and hard about it before you do it or arrange a trial to see if the investment is worth it. Obviously, the design of the banner is extremely important.

What are Local Sites and Directories?

With most local business searches happening online through local search engines and local search directories, local search marketing and local search advertising are more important than ever. A huge part of local search optimization is the local search directory. There are now dozens of places online to find local businesses, so knowing the best local directories for local search and how to submit to and get listed with all of these local search engines and directories is extremely important to today’s local business.

What are pop up ads?

A type of window that appears on top of (over) the browser window of a Web site that a user has visited. In contrast to a pop-under ad, which appears behind (in back of) the browser window, a pop-up is more obtrusive as it covers other windows, particularly the window that the user is trying to read. Pop-ups ads are used extensively in advertising on the Web, though advertising is not the only application for pop-up windows.

What is email marketing?

A type of direct marketing that uses e-mail as the marketing communication delivery method. Email marketing is used in a number of ways by organizations and marketers for brand and customer loyalty building. You might be added on a list when you fill out a form or buy something online. This extremely low cost and can be effective because you are targeting your direct audience and customers.

What are some of the most common mistakes that people make in their online advertising efforts?

The most common mistake in online advertising is spending loads of money online without having the ability to track the results from your spending. In fact, to start any campaign without some kind of a tracking system is similar to throwing darts in the dark - how do you know if you hit the bull’s-eye or not?

Now what?

The next thing you need to do is develop a budget. You need to know what you have to spend and you need to know your limits. You can spend thousands of dollars within a few days and not get anything. Wet always recommends a sniper approach versus a shotgun blast!

Other advice?

Don’t start too soon. Anytime you start something new, make sure everything is set up and ready. The last first impression you want to make is that you are not ready to do business. Confirm, email, phone, fax and all systems are up and ready before you start advertising.
